USC vs UCLA Scouting Preview

This Saturday features a highly anticipated bout between two top notch Pac 12 teams that have both played quite well despite some early struggles. UCLA had a lot of expectations coming into the season and have underwhelmed in comparison. With plenty of NFL talent boasting both squads there are plenty of players to keep a keen eye on.  USC has been plesantly surprised with its play from quarterback Cody Kessler as he has lead them to a pretty respectable record. Nelson Agholor and Leonard Williams might be the most highly touted prospects from USC and have received plenty of first round grades from scouts everywhere. Here are some other prospects to keep an eye on.

Brett Hundley QB UCLA- Hundley is arguably the most polarizing prospect in this years draft, if he declares. Posting impressive statistics and showing a pretty good overall game, Hundley was considered to be a top prospect coming into this season. However, his ability to go through progressions and anticipate has regressed and that is a major concern. Hundley has the arm and athleticism to be a good quarterback but the fact that he has regressed in an important aspect is a definite red flag. Hundley will be going against a decent USC defense and will need to get the ball out quickly with Leonard Williams coming after him. Hundley has NFL tools and talent but he will need to improve some critical areas of his game if he wants to be succesful. His arm strength and mechanics should intrigue plenty of NFL scouts and general managers but as of recent has dropped fairly drastically on many draft boards.

Nelson Agholor WR USC- Yet another in a long line of USC wideouts, Agholor could be considered to be the safest pick of all receivers in this years draft class. He is not the most explosive in and out of his breaks but his route running is clean and has decent open field speed. He excels as a gap finder and does a phenomenal job finding soft spots in zone coverage. He has improved this year and has become a go to target for Cody Kessler. He lacks a second gear and wont make many miss in the open field but he gets the job done as a route runner. He will be going against a fundamentally sound UCLA defense and will have to open up his full repertoire to excel in this game.

Eric Kendricks LB UCLA- Linebackers have become the strength of this UCLA defense for the last couple years and players like Anthony Barr and Jordan Zumwalt were the most recent departures. Kendricks has filled in quite nicely. Kendricks is a highly instinctive player who shows phenomenal sideline to sideine range despite his size. He is a fundamentally sound tackler and is quick to read his keys. In coverage he is stout and doesn’t give up any big plays by keeping things underneath. Kendricks has quickly risen up draft boards and for good reason. Attacking the diverse Buck Allen will be one of his biggest challenges of the season.  Kendricks will be an exceptional NFL player if he continues to progress, size has obviously not been a factor with the recent success of Chris Borland and others.

Hayes Pullard LB USC- Pullard is one of the more underrated players in this years draft class. He is considered by many to be a 3rd to 4th round prospect and might be a steal if he is selected there. Pullard wont blow you away with his speed, strength, or explosivness but he rarely makes mistakes and is a very solid tackler in the open field. His pursuit angles are better than advertised and does a decent job shedding blocks as well. He is very similar to recent USC Alum Devon Kennard in many aspects and should intrigue many NFL scouts and personnel.
